What the Quran & Hadiths say about liars

What does the Quran say about those who tell lies?

"In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie."

(Quran. Surah Al-Baqarah 2, verse 10)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known for his truthfulness and honesty before Allah sent the revelation to him.

"They only invent falsehood who do not believe in the verse of Allah, and it is those who are the liars."

(Quran. Surah An-Nahl 16, verse 105)

This serves as a reminder against adopting behaviors associated with those who do not adhere to our faith, specifically regarding the avoidance of falsehoods. The interpretation of this verse emphasizes the significance of truthfulness within the Muslim community, contrasting it with the potential for deceit. It is not an assertion that all non-believers are dishonest, but rather a call for Muslims to uphold the value of truth. And those Muslims amongst us who do lie are hypocrites.

"And indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, 'This is from Allah,' but it is not from Allah. And they speak untruth about Allah while they know."

(Quran. Surah Ali Imran 3, verse 78)

Sunan Ibn Majah 4036

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“There will come to the people years of treachery, when the liar will be regarded as honest, and the honest man will be regarded as a liar; the traitor will be regarded as faithful, and the faithful man will be regarded as a traitor; and the Ruwaibidah will decide matters.’ It was said: ‘Who are the Ruwaibidah?’ He said: ‘Vile and base men who control the affairs of the people.’”

Here this hadith about what is to come on a vast level and what is already amongst us. This is actually going on right now, many people will believe what is on the television sets. Just bare in mind that the television has programs right? Channels? To channel in and program us all! The less you watch and listen to what is pumped out of television sets the less lies u will be told, the less you will doubt things and the less you will believe them.

However, it is not solely about the content disseminated through televisions, as a majority of individuals now utilize social media, accessing news feeds on their mobile devices and readily searching for information online. Please be aware that Google does not possess all knowledge, and furthermore, it is not only that they lack complete information, but also that they selectively present and, at times, withhold information online.

Same goes for people, some people will lie to your face and we will believe those lies, either put of lack of knowledge, laziness in finding the truth or just because everyone else believes them. It's foolish really, and when the truth is spoken it is dismissed, overlooked, and made to believe that it is lies.

"And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie or denies His verses? Indeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed."

(Quran. Surah An-An'am 6, verse 21)

"See how they will lie about themselves. And lost from them will be what they use to invent,."

(Quran. Surah An-An'am 6, verse 24)

'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

"It is obligatory for you to tell the truth, for truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to Paradise, and the man who continues to speak the truth and endeavours to tell the truth is eventually recorded as truthful with Allah, and beware of telling of a lie for telling of a lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell-Fire, and the person who keeps telling lies and endeavours to tell a lie is recorded as a liar with Allah."

[Sahih Muslim 2607c]

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known for his truthfulness and honesty before Allah sent the revelation to him

"So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they will meet Him - because they failed Allah in what they promised Him and because they [habitually] used to lie."

(Quran. Surah At-Tawbah 9, verse 77)

It is imperative that we avoid consistent dishonesty, regardless of the scale; instead, we should strive to emulate the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ  commitment to truthfulness.

"But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars."

(Quran. Surah An-Ankabut 29, verse 3)

If Allah can create all of this entire universe and everything around it, in it and on it, He can do anything, SubhanAllah. And Allah will surely make evident the liars!

"And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah untruth while he is being invited to Islam. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people."

(Quran. Surah As-Saff 61, verse 7)

"And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers?"

(Quran. Surah An-Ankabut 29, verse 68)

The recurrence of these verses throughout the Quran underscores the critical significance of refraining from fabricating falsehoods concerning Allah ﷻ, and the severe consequences that will befall those who do so.

Mishkat al-Masabih 5438

Jabir b. Samura told that he heard the Prophet say, "Before the last hour there will be great liars, so beware of them."

The Last Hour is amongst us, we see the deception before our very eyes, with our very ears. Prepare now brothers and sisters and be those who are honest, truthful, practicing Muslims.

May Allah guide us to the Truth and make us aware of the falsifiers, keep us firm on our deen and strive to make the best intentions in pleasing our Creator. May He grant our hearts aright and aid us in attaining closeness to Him, Ameen.
